Classes are held Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm continuously.

PROGRAM OUTLINE

Program Title: Basic Floral Design FD-101
Credential issued: Certificate of Completion
Program Objective: Introduction to the floral industry: designs for all occasions, floral design mechanics, and flower shop set-up and management, pricing for profit as well as preparing a student for an entry level position in retail flower sales and floral design.

Program Description: The Basic Class emphasis is a compressed, comprehensive study on learning the elements and principles of floral design and salability of the finished product also, exposure of an extensive supply of fresh flowers and foliages is available to the students. The Basic Class is an introductory class into the business of flowers: how to run a successful retail shop, buy flowers and hard goods, create pricing boards, stock rotation, calculating costs of goods sold, labor, services and general flower shop management.  Students are encouraged to attend the Advanced Class following the Basic Class expanding their knowledge and skill in retail floristry.

101-A Elements, Principles and Fundamentals of Floral Design. The basis from which all designs are built upon. In this segment students will be introduced to the building block of design. one-half
101-B Design Mechanics: proper tools, floral foam, tape, wire mesh and caging also how-to create a silk arrangement.  Here students will become familiar with the many products used to create a mechanically sound floral design. As well as how to charge appropriately for those products. one-half
101-C Color theories applied to selecting flowers and choosing the right container. In this segment students will become aware of the powerful use of color.  The first element the eye recognizes, color and its many uses can make or break a design. Each student will be introduced to a color wheel and understand how to use it. one
101-D Purchasing, Care and Handling for Fresh Flowers: cooler temperature and humidity. Not only buying the right amount of flowers is vital for a businesses survival, but understanding how to care for our perishable product.  Here students will be taught the best way to process and care for their flowers and foliages. one-half
101-E Basic Design Shapes and Styles for weddings, sympathy, hospital, anniversary, get well and many more occasions. Introduction to the many design forms used in the industry.  Form as it relates to function is the lesson in this segment. Students will learn how to make the right design for the right purpose. one
101-F Pricing and Mark-up for Products and Labor.  In order to make money you have to know how to charge appropriately for your products, labor and services.  Here students will be given information on industry standards for pricing as well as understanding perceived value. one
101-G Wire Services and Order Gatherers: how to join and how they affect your business.  The floral industry is very complex.  Here students will be trained on how wire services and other organizations work. The focus is to help them realize that if this service is the right service for their business. one-half
101-H Plant and Flower Identification and Terminology.  Students will be introduced to the many fresh flowers and foliages used in the floral industry.  There are literally hundreds of different types of flowers and foliages.  Here students will understand seasonal availability, as will as, what is domestic and foreign products. one-half
101-I Bow tying, ribbon treatments, wire usage and applying decorative  accessories. Still considered a staple in the floral industry, students will learn how to make a beautiful bow, as well as “dressing up” their floral designs with other products. one
101-J Guided tour of a floral wholesale house includes introduction of products needed to start a retail flower shop.  The students will be taken on a guided tour of the wholesale facility.  They can ask questions from the sales staff regarding ordering flowers.  Here we can simply walk down stairs to see the vast array of products used in a retail floral shop. one-half
101-K Practical Application of Floral Design-Creating Arrangements for All Occasions: Wedding, Sympathy, Birthday, Anniversary, Centerpieces, Corsages. Students will create design forms for all occasions. They will create virtually every type of design sold in the shop. twenty eight

Entrance requirements or prerequisites:
There are no requirements for the Basic Floral Design Class except an interest to learn and a passion for flowers.
